Coastal prairie at UHCC. Photo credit: Chelse PratherThe UHCC facility consists of a portion (ca. 1,000 acres) of a former army base, Camp Wallace. This land includes approximately 300 acres of coastal tallgrass prairie, which is a highly-endangered habitat, with less than 0.1% remaining nationwide. The remainder of the facility is forested, with the community dominated by exotic Chinese tallow. A long term management goal is to restore the forest to prairie.
